Woodland Cultural Centre (WCC) is currently working to have the Mohawk Institute recognized as a National Historic Site. The former residential school in Brantford was operational from 1828-1970.
WCC Executive Director Heather George says if the site receives status as a historic site, it allows for funding to be accessed for maintenance on the site through Parks Canada as well as added promotional benefits.
Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) granted approval for WCC to move forward in its application process for the site designation during the Sept. 16 general finance meeting.
Council also made a commitment of $1 million over five years to WCC and its Dwadę’nyota’ Dwaga:’shǫ:’ǫh “We Celebrate Our Stories” Capital Campaign, that is raising funds to construct a new cultural centre facility.
George says currently over $1.2 million dollars have been raised towards the campaign and its $65 million end goal.
