The women of the Centre des femmes du Haut-Saint-François La Passerelle are mobilizing to address the severe housing crisis in their region.
Recently, they staged a three-week occupation outside the office of provincial deputy François Jacques to draw attention to the issue and pressure the government to act.
Housing prices in Haut-Saint-François are high, similar to those in larger cities like Sherbrooke, but the region lacks adequate services and public transportation. The shortage of housing options, particularly social housing, disproportionately affects vulnerable groups such as single mothers and victims of domestic violence.
La Passerelle is advocating for measures including an apartment register, limits on annual rent increases, and significant investments in social housing. These initiatives aim to alleviate the housing crisis and support the community.
