With fall around the corner, black bears will be adventuring out to fatten up for the winter. During this time, WildSafeBC is reminding everyone to create a bear-safe neighbourhood.
About 60 per cent of the black bear conflicts in B.C. usually involve garbage says WildSafeBC, an organization that offers education on preventing conflicts with wildlife.
CHLY spoke with Gabriela De Romeri, communications specialist, and Kiera Brown, Nanaimo coordinator for WildSafeBC, about the importance of lowering attachments that would bring in bears.
In Nanaimo, Brown says the number one attachment she sees is people storing their garbage bins outside or placing their bins out for pick up the night before. But she says this happens because usually, a homeowner does not know the effects it could cause with bears.
