Myths and negative ideas have perpetuated surrounding the donkey species for years, according to a local donkey sanctuary. And so, it’s trying to change the bad rap that the creatures get.
The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada in Puslinch “ rescues and rehabilitates donkeys, mules and hinnies who have been neglected, abused or otherwise need Sanctuary,” the organization’s website says. (In case you’re wondering, a hinnie is an animal whose father is a horse and its mother is a donkey).
Kayla Johnson, the sanctuary’s donkey welfare and education manager, says bad language has created the idea that donkeys are stubborn, negative, unintelligent creatures. She hopes to change that mentality with a series of webinars called ‘Why Donkeys?’ which explains the nuance of the donkey species and what we can learn from them.
CICW spoke with Johnson following the kickoff of the series.
