Frank Wray, Deputy Mayor of Smithers, has been a council member for over ten years. He has seen “big changes” on Smithers town council, especially in 2023.
Councillor Wray told CICK News that the diversity of age and background of new councillors elected in 2022 has created a more inclusive reflection of the town. He also said that 2023 was one of the most challenging years he’s experienced on council, citing anti-pride protests, the homelessness and housing debates within the community and the threat of drought and flooding the town had to manage with the Regional District.
Looking ahead to 2024, Councillor Wray said that he is excited to share the new Child Care Plan (which has been in the works since 2021 in Smithers), and much-needed environmental updates to the town’s water treatment plant as well as municipal wellness projects such as new sidewalks and construction on a safer bike path.
