Wellington Rotary Beach is getting an accessible beach mat and two specially designed floatable wheelchairs thanks to the Rotary Club of Wellington in Prince Edward County.
Rotary President Lyn McGowan presented Council with the plan which was unanimously approved.
The project has been in the works since 2022 originally consisting of a modest design costing $10,000.00 to be financed by Wellington and area Rotary clubs and a grant from Rotary District — but then, an anonymous corporate sponsor donated $42,000.00 allowing the project to expand to include two special chairs and a double mat for a total cost of $52,00.00.
That means, for the first time, people requiring wheelchairs, families with strollers and others with mobility issues will be able to safely access the beach using the specially designed mat. With the special wheelchair, people can be wheeled up and down the beach and even be taken into the water because it floats.
