Residents and officials gathered on Wednesday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre, and the unveiling of the refurbished Sackville Sports Wall.
CHMA hears from Tantramar mayor Andrew Black; former Sackville councillor and fundraiser for the Civic Centre project Joyce O’Neil; former MLA and Civic Centre supporter Peter Mesheau; and deputy mayor Greg Martin, who sits on the Sackville Sports Wall board.
O’Neil recalls that after the loss of Mount Allison’s former hockey rink, Allison Gardens, “we needed a place like this.”
Although three levels of government contributed toward the construction of the Civic Centre, another $1.2 million dollars was fundraised to make the project a reality and to fully outfit the arena, which was a work in progress even after it opened.
