Two Indigenous artists from nearby Alderville First Nation were present on Wednesday to unveil twenty six banners for the new Waterfront Wisdom Pathway in Cobourg.
Artists Rick Beaver and Koren Smoke participated in the ceremony at the Cobourg Marina before leading those in attendance on a tour of the Pathway at Cobourg’s waterfront.
The banners, displayed on the lamp posts, are meant to bring vibrant expressions of storytelling, tradition, and reminders of connections to the land. The artists selected the harbourfront location due to the significance of water to Indigenous culture.
Smoke’s work is based on the teachings of the Seven Grandfathers – Respect, Love, Bravery, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth. Beaver opted to showcase the themes of land and water creatures, plants and flowers, and the connection to the Indigenous community and its art forms.
Residents and visitors can check out Experience Cobourg to read more about the artists and their banners.
