Later today, UQAM’s (L’Université du Québec à Montréal) academic council will vote on a resolution that would call for a ceasefire, the end to any weapons investments, and what activists call a “de facto academic boycott” against Israeli universities.
The resolution was adopted unanimously by the university’s Board of Directors last Wednesday.
Residents of UQAM’s pro-Palestine encampment, known as the “Popular University Al Aqsa of UQAM,” have pledged to dismantle the encampment by June 6 if the academic council approves the resolution.
Previously, UQAM won a provisional injunction against the camp from Quebec Superior Court. That decision allowed for a partial dismantling of the camp, but was not acted on by Montreal police—though police violently removed protestors occupying a nearby street on May 21.
CKUT spoke to Independent Jewish Voices’ Niall Clapham Ricardo at Thursday’s press conference outside the Popular University Al Aqsa.
