Entry to the University of the Fraser Valley’s (UFV) International Women’s Day event was disrupted by the appearance of a protest group holding signs and verbally harassing people outside the venue.
UFV marked March 8 by hosting a panel discussion featuring prominent women and non-binary speakers from around the university and the province of B.C. CIVL Radio learned that the protesters were likely attracted by the attendance of panelist Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer. But picketers were also recorded shouting and holding signs with a variety of messaging in opposition of the event, its attendees and presenters.
“There were a bunch of things being protested,” said panelist, student and UFV Pride president Ray Kelly. “But it’s still upsetting, no matter how much you expect something like that to happen.”
