Like many other communities in Ontario, Peterborough is suffering from a shortage of family physicians. To help address this problem, the Peterborough Family Health Team (PFHT) opened two health clinics entirely devoted to unattached patients – people without a family doctor.
“There’s 32 000 people in the area without a family doctor, and that is growing rapidly,” says PFHT CEO Duff Sprague.
PFHT had to get “creative” to help solve the problem, says Sprague, as their budget has “not increased in a decade;” the clinic found a solution in recruiting retired physicians for part-time work.
The PFHT Health Clinic has locations in both Peterborough and Lakefield. Appointments can be made through their website.
PFHT is searching for additional sources of funding to open a third clinic in the area.
