The student-led UNBC Musical Productions (UNBCMP) and professional theatre company Theatre North West (TNW) are partnering up again this year to presents an edgy escapade which may challenge the comfort zone of some in the audience.
Cry-Baby is a musical by John Waters, a filmmaker, writer, actor and artist who is known for pushing gender and societal boundaries. Many know it as a film released in 1990 starring Johnny Depp.
The musical, set in the 1950s, parodies class prejudice in the context of socio-political critique. UNBCMP’s Rikki Holland says their ensemble benefited from the professional guidance of TNW to push the envelope towards a Prince George audience.
The play may confront the audience with a humbling reflection or two, but Holland expresses optimism that the Prince George community will come out to support their independent theatre efforts yet again.
Cry Baby the Musical runs from March 14th-17th and 21st-23rd.
