Loyalist Township council authorized the immediate expansion of the Food Cycler project by another 100 units.
A Food Cycler is a kitchen countertop appliance to dehydrate and process food waste which otherwise would go to the landfill. It can handle all kinds of food waste, not just vegetable matter that goes in backyard compost bins.
There is a rate of $100 per unit subsidy from the township, along with a subsidy provided by Impact Canada.
According to staff’s report, the pilot project received an average rating of 4.7/5 based on responses from 82 of 100 participants.
During the 6 month pilot program, an estimated total of 13.2 metric tonnes of food waste was diverted from landfills by the 100 units in Loyalist. Residents reported a 0.37 garbage bag reduction per week, which would total 19.2 garbage bags per household per year of food waste diverted from landfills. There was also an estimated diversion of 17.2 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalents from the 100 units in Loyalist.
