The town of Houston is once again in a state of unease with the latest CANFOR announcement of a further suspension to build a new sawmill.
Back in July of 2023, after a long and uncomfortable wait, CANFOR (a North American lumber, pulp and paper, and pellet company) announced they would reinvest in Houston and build a new sawmill.
CANFOR has been the top employer in Houston for nearly 85 years. Construction was slated to begin on the current Sawmill land in April of 2024. For the 300 people that were employed by CANFOR in Houston, this news comes as employment benefits have run out and the town has started to see the trickle-down effects of the mill’s suspension.
Mayor Shane Brienen talks to CICK News to speak about the town’s next steps to work with CANFOR, as well as Joanne and Don Woodbeck, two community members who are speaking about the effects they are seeing in town already.
