The Toronto Winter Plan for people experiencing homelessness has gained more respites and beds through the collaboration of multiple organizations in the city.
The Winter Plan received an update in October to make the services provided to homeless people in the city more accessible. This included opening warming sites at -5 C rather than -15 C and more housing opportunities.
At a conference on Dec. 20, Gord Tanner, general manager of shelter support and housing administration division, and Coun. Alejandro Bravo shared the most recent changes and stats of the homeless population in the city.
Tanner announced that the city has confirmed the use of the Better Living Centre on the Exhibition Grounds as a warming respite. When fully operational it will hold 240 people.
Covenant House, a service partner with the City, has also opened a new 24 hour warming centre for youth experiencing homelessness.
