For the fifth year in a row, Toronto has been designated one of the Tree Cities of the World. It received the honour on Earth Day.
The Tree Cities of the World designation comes from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation. It recognizes cities which are committed to maintaining, managing and celebrating their urban forests and trees.
Currently the City plants over 120,000 trees a year and maintains an estimated 11.5 million.
With a lot of room to grow, the city has plans to maintain the title. The City has a goal to have 40 per cent canopy coverage of trees throughout the city by 2040.
CJTM News talks to Kim Statham, Director of Urban Forestry for the City of Toronto, about the award and the management of trees in the city.
