The 25th annual Tom Longboat Run will take place on Jun. 4 in Six Nations and organizers say they hope the event will continue in helping to encourage the Six Nations community to live a healthy lifestyle.
Cindy Martin, traditional wellness coordinator for Six Nations of the Grand River, says the first race was planned at a “profound” time when diabetes was affecting First Nations peoples.
Since the first annual run, it has grown into three different categories and allows participants to choose to walk, run or bike.
Martin says the event also inspired the Six Nations Diabetes Wellness Program to form the “Honouring Running Club,” which is now the program’s “Couch to 5k,” where it’s members train and participate in the Toronto Island Run.
Registration for the 25th Tom Longboat Run will begin at 8 a.m. at the Six Nations Community Hall and the run will begin at 9 a.m.
