Despite the Sleeping Cabins project ‘winding down’ to a close for September 2024, the project has secured a new permanent location, an outpouring of support, and a promising future.
Beginning in 2021 with a partnership between the City of Kingston and Our Livable Solutions (OSL), the Sleeping Cabins provided transitional housing and services. Without a permanent location over the years, residents were forced to move seasonally, making the project less effective than council originally hoped. This flaw led to the decision to end the project in November 2023.
In the short time since the decision, the OSL team managed to secure a permanent location courtesy of Crossroads United Church, garner financial support, put together a plan to present to council, and effectively save the project.
Council voted 12-1 to help give the project another chance, with up to $500,000 being allocated to support the move.
