A Statistics Canada report showed that Kitchener-Waterloo has the highest amount of police reported hate crimes in Canada. With the region’s growing population, diverse community, and recently publicized hate-crimes, the Region of Waterloo is working to put a plan together to launch an anti-hate campaign.
The push for an anti-hate campaign came from a delegate, Ashwin Annamalai who spoke before council back in October of 2024. Annamalai shared his experience with discrimination in an emotional delegation.
Fauzia Baig the director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the region of Waterloo spoke with CKWR News about the need for an anti-hate campaign.
