The Terrace Tears to Hope Society is hosting the annual National Red Dress day Walk on May 5 to remember and honor missing and murdered loved ones.
Terrace has held red dress a walk since 2019 when it was first put on by The Tears to Hope Society. The event has been growing in size each year, with the recent walk on February 14 attracting about 150 participants.
CFNR talked with Denise Halfyard, Tears to Hope executive assistant, about how Indigenous women are disproportionately affected by this crisis.
Highway 16 between Prince Rupert and Prince George is also known as the “Highway of Tears,” were dozens of women have gone missing or been found murdered. The area has cases dating back to the 1970s, but continues to be a current issue among Indigenous communities.
This year, the walk will be from the local RCMP station to the George Little Park.
