Despite the growing need for housing, the Telkwa Seniors Housing Society’s request for a new unit has been denied. John McDevitt, the Telkwa Seniors Housing Society President, received an email from BC Housing on March 11 informing the organization of the decision.
The reason BC Housing gave for denying their request was that there was simply too many applicants. CICK will be following up with BC Housing to learn more about their capacity for projects under the current provincial demand for housing.
There are currently 19 people on a waitlist for the next round of affordable seniors housing in the village of Telkwa, which is approxiately 15 kilometres southeast of Smithers. On the top of the list is an elderly woman who lives in a 5th wheel whose pipes froze last winter.
CICK News talked to John McDevitt about the decision.
