February marks Black History Month across Canada, and remote Northern BC outposts like Prince George are no exception.
The community’s university UNBC chose to engage with one of its campus’s most active clubs, the Afro-Caribbean Student Association (ACSA) this past month.
While ACSA took the lead to organize events, and the dissemination of Black history on their online feeds, the university got behind the club, and the month, leveraging their efforts, organizers said. UNBC’s website advocated for the occasion, and got involved in an ACSA fundraising opportunity through the Timberwolves Black Heritage game earlier this February.
Overall, ACSA member Empress Sears is impressed with the participation. Looking to the future, she hopes for a repeat of the enthusiasm and feels some of the university’s integral resources could be further used, such as a themed history seminar.
