The sound of thousands of cranes trumpeting across the sky on sunny days in the Skeena Region of Northern BC marks the unofficial beginning of spring.
This incredible bird is the sandhill crane, one of the largest flying birds in North America. This ancient bird is a symbol of spring for many British Columbians and when you hear their call, you can’t help but stop and look up.
They migrate in flocks and by the time they make it to the Skeena Region, they are entering the last hump of a long journey on their way to the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
Wildlife biologist Sean Sharpe is familiar with the sandhill crane and has spent many springs enjoying their way through the Skeena Region. He talks about the sandhill crane’s lifespan, habits and unique anatomy which allows for a clear, loud call. Listen to the audio to hear the sandhill crane yourself.
