Almost a year after a fire destroyed the Colborne Foodland, Sobeys has informed Cramahe Township that it will not be building a new grocery store.
Foodland, which was located in downtown Colborne, was the township’s only grocery store before it went up in flames in May 2023. The next closest grocery stores are in Cobourg to the west and Brighton to the east.
Sobeys officials sent a letter to the municipality Tuesday stated reopening the store is not a viable option, adding that a number of former Colborne employees have already started working at Cobourg’s Foodland store while the company will support remaining employees to transition to another store or pursue other employment and career opportunities.
With the departure of Sobeys, Cramahe Mayor Mandy Martin hopes another interested party will consider opening a new store to Colborne.
