Montreal’s City Hall hosted the launch of the sixth annual Muslim Awareness Week on Jan. 25, remembering the tragic mosque attack at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City on Jan. 29, 2017. Muslim Awareness week is happening from Jan. 25 to 31.
The event commemorates the 6 victims while showcasing Muslim Quebecers achievements in a variety of disciplines and activities — arts, politics, writing roundtables, workshops and more. Organizers invite Montrealers of all ages, communities and faiths to join them at any one of 20 events happening this week.
MAW co-founder, Salam El-Mousawi, highlighted the event’s purpose. “To shed light on Muslims, their contributions, challenges, and concerns in Quebec,” and emphasized the importance of “dialogue with mutual respect.”
The volunteers aim to extend its reach into more regions – especially rural areas.
Events leading up to the vigils on the 29th are listed here.
