Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) will be inviting municipalities within the Haldimand Tract to attend a summit in March on Six Nations’ ongoing litigation case surrounding the 950,000 acres of lands along the Grand River.
SNEC and its Consultation and Accommodation Process (CAP) team say the summit will help educate mayors and councilors from the surrounding municipalities on the traditional treaty rights of the Haldimand Proclamation, and the duty to consult with Six Nations in regards to the Haldimand Tract.
Six Nations Lands Researcher and CAP team member Phil Monture said the educational aspect of the event is important.
“The education is a major factor, we need political input with the mayors and municipalities up and down the Haldimand Tract,” he said.
“They don’t understand they’re in the Haldimand Tract. They don’t know what their legal responsibilities for consultations or accommodations are.”
The event will take place in March after CAP team and SNEC finalize its schedule.
