Six Nations Community Food Bank has received its charitable number to officially become recognized as a charitable organization.
Mary Monture, board chair for the food bank, said the application process took over four years for the organization to finally receive its charitable number.
She says the food bank is in the process of finding ways the new status will help in generating funds and donations to help with the food bank services, but assured work is being done to find ways the organization can benefit from it.
The food bank is still seeing an influx of community members looking for assistance, she says, and the food bank itself struggles to keep up with community demands.
Monture also discussed rising product costs and the impact its having on community members, collaborating with organizations on and off-reserve, and food accessibility contributing to the influx of Six Nations members seeking assistance from Six Nations Food Bank.
