Fawn Porter of Six Nations was recently named to the 26-women roster for the Haudenosaunee Nationals that will compete for the inaugural Women’s Box Lacrosse World Championships in September.
Porter says the women’s game has largely survived through players’ love of the sport, but now that the championships were announced, it’s given current and former players motivation to get back into the sport and to have something to strive for.
Porter says she can feel the momentum building surrounding the women’s game and is looking to secure a medal at the World Championships to bring back and celebrate with Six Nations.
Beyond September’s tournament, Porter talked about the inclusion of lacrosse in the 2028 Olympics and her hopes to compete under the Haudenosaunee banner.
“If the Olympics want to have our sport, they need to invite us,” she said.
“You can’t separate Haudenosaunee from lacrosse. It’s deeply embedded in our culture, our people, our history.”
