On Feb. 20, Sherbrooke City Council adopted a resolution urging Quebec to amend the Highway Safety Code, proposing a standard urban speed limit of 30 km/h, unless otherwise indicated.
The move aims to streamline traffic regulations and reduce the need for investing in extensive signage, saving the municipality over $2 million in infrastructure costs.
Despite differing opinions on the optimal speed limit, with some advocating for 40 km/h, the council ultimately rallied behind the 30 kilometers per hour proposal. Though there were attempts to table the resolution for further refinement, it was ultimately passed with a majority vote of 9 in favor and 6 against.
