Scotiabank closed its branches in Glace Bay and New Waterford yesterday.
The bank told customers last year that their account information is being switched to the main branch in Sydney.
But some customers say driving to another community is an inconvenience. Glace Bay and New Waterford are both a 15-20 minute drive to Sydney.
Other options for the customers are online banking or choosing another bank. An advocate for seniors and people with disabilities, Marcie Shwery-Stanley, says both of those options are difficult tasks for some people.
Scotiabank declined to be interviewed by CKOA radio about the issue, but they emailed a statement that says: a statement reads: “With customer preferences changing, and more day-to-day banking being done digitally, we are continuing to evolve how we serve our customers and invest in areas that make it easier for our customers to bank with us from wherever they are.”
