Crime Detective David Coffey and other members of the financial crimes unit were at Union Station on Tuesday to build awareness about fraud. Coffey says that they could dedicated every day to fraud awareness.
With Valentines Day happening tomorrow, Coffey highlighted romance fraud as a major concern. TPS has been keeping track of romance fraud reports since last May. Coffey says that they’ve received almost 100 reports and “almost $9 million in damages.”
This is the first awareness event that Toronto Police Services (TPS) financial crimes unit has hosted this year with more to come.
As of Dec. 2023 Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre found there were 62,325 reports of fraud and $554 million absconded by fraudsters.
