Skaters were excited for the recent re-opening of the canal but are disappointed by its closure just four days later. The the National Capital Commission (NCC) made the announcement this week, closing the canal in the evening of Jan. 24.
Last night’s ice storm have left Ottawa residents with a sleet of thin ice, a few centimeters of snow and temperatures above zero. With the canal needing two consistent weeks of -10 to -20 temperatures, the NCC has chosen to close the canal to keep the ice intact.
Due to warm weather and an extensive amount of freezing rain this past week, the NCC doesn’t have an exact date for when, or if, the canal will re-open.
