A series of community open houses around the topic of community planning will be happening in Prince George in early April. Accessibility has been a topic of discussion in recent months during the City of Prince George’s Official Community Plan (OCP). The open houses are the next step after consultations and surveys which took place last fall, and are an opportunity to advance the issue.
To explore what accessibility means in terms of community planning, CFUR News talks to UNBC’s Dr. Mark Groulx, about the Universal Design (UD) concept, which advocates for functional construction which is accessible to anyone without needing additional modification, or assistive devices.
Also featured in this program is Mikhaila Carr, A UNBC School of Planning student who is researching a progression from Universal to Inclusive Design (ID), emphasizing diverse human factors. Carr explores ID’s relevance in Prince George, highlighting gender issues in urban planning, including how lighting and colour choices affect women’s safety.
