Hundreds of Montreal renters rallied in the city’s Petite Patrie borough Feb. 3 for what could be the last big protest before Bill 31 is passed.
Study of the contentious housing bill, which would see the end to the right to lease transfers, was finally completed on Tuesday (Feb. 6).
A common source of protestors’ anger was Housing Minister France-Elaine Duranceau. An ex-real estate developer, she was found to have committed an ethics breach for favouring her old business partner in an “abusive” fashion. The Regroupement des comités logement et associations de locataires du Québec (RCLALQ), who organized Saturday’s protest, is calling on her to resign.
