The increasingly popular Queens County cottage country has a garbage problem. And the municipality wants to clean it up.
Councillors will vote on several recommendations at their June 25 meeting to mitigate chronic trash pileups and overflows at 40 so-called “greybox” sites in areas such as Labelle and Molega.
Many of the properties are on private roads that don’t have the regular garbage pickup service like most property owners who live on public roads. So the municipality has drop-off sites throughout the region where residents deposit their waste, recyclables and compostables. The problem is that garbage piles up outside the provided grey boxes when the boxes become full. And, people often leave large items such as furniture at the grey box sites.
District 6 Coun. David Brown has a lot of such properties in his area. In January, he asked the region’s staff to come up with possible solutions to the refuse abuse.
Staff has made five recommendations, including increased enforcement and collection.
