The Regional Director of Area B for the SRD Mark Vonesch is advocating to make reducing the district’s carbon footprint it a priority in the new strategic plan.
“This hasn’t been done before at the Regional District and it’s a first step. We’re still in the draft form of our strategic plan, but this is something that I’ve pushed for and managed to get support for on the board,” he said.
Vonesch noted that Cortes Island has one of the highest levels of organic content in their garbage when compared to other regional communities.
Currently, there is no curbside organics pickup service for Cortes Island, but much of the Comox Strathcona Waste Management communities are now offering the service, like Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay, Royston, and Cumberland.
