Queen’s University held its official homecoming festivities last weekend, welcoming alumni back to campus and celebrating the Gaels’ triumph over the Waterloo Warriors during the football game at Richardson Stadium. But the city can expect a second wave of festivities as students plan to host a ‘faux homecoming’ this weekend.
The University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) was created in last month in response to the size of previous years’ events. It will increase police and bylaw enforcement in the area until November 3. The City had braced for a busy weekend, with over 400 students on Aberdeen Street and significant fines. However, this year’s Homecoming Saturday was quiet, with many students away for fall reading week, and Aberdeen Street still under construction.
With over 7,000 students voting in a social media poll for a second celebration dubbed “foco” to take place this weekend and their return from reading week, the upcoming weekend is expected to draw larger crowds.
