The CAQ is tweaking Quebec’s social assistance regime. Quebecers on welfare say the changes don’t go far enough.
The proposed Bill 71, tabled in September, would add minor incentives and supports for education, work, and socialization in an attempt to make the system less “punitive.”
Steve Baird, an organizer at the Front commun des personnes assistées sociales du Québec, says that without more funding, the changes do little to address the underlying problems with Quebec’s social safety net.
CKUT spoke to Baird in advance of a rally outside the Montreal offices of the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale.
