After years of advocacy from trans rights advocates, Quebec has finally made X gender markers available on IDs. “I was thrilled when I heard the news,” said Rowan W., a Montrealer who uses X markers.
However, Rowan voiced concerns about accessing gender-specific health services with an X marker on their RAMQ card. “I’m a little afraid that if I have to access services considered women’s health, I may be excluded if I have an X gender on my card.”
The announcement came over three years after a Quebec Superior Court ruling which invalidated the section of Quebec’s Civil Code which disallowed Quebecers from changing their sex on birth certificates.
CJLO has omitted Rowan’s last name from this text to protect their identity due to potential safety concerns.
