Qalipu First Nations is studying populations on green crab throughout the Bay of Islands.
During the early 1800s, green crab was found in North America and it has since arrived in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Byron Bennett, a Natural Resources Technician with Qalipu First Nations, says the Qalipu Environmental and Natural Resources team has been studying populations at sites throughout the Bay of Islands and the west coast. Data collected is analyzed to see if the population is declining. The team is also keeping an eye on an increase in tunicate, which is found on fishing gear and rocks at dockside, and looks like a thick slime.
