Starting June 1, public safety radio will be in effect province-wide, which will mean faster response times and enables all four Atlantic Provinces to communicate during an emergency, according to the provincial government.
The Newfoundland and Labrador government committed to this project four years ago and committed $181 million over 12 years to implement the infrastructure.
Justice and Public Safety Minister John Hogan says, “this endeavor to implement a new system incorporates thousands of radio users, from police, to firefighters, to paramedics.” It also includes radios for ground search and rescue teams, as well as volunteer fire departments across the province.
