Memramcook mayor Maxime Bourgeois is feeling hopeful about the sale of a historic Acadian property in the midst of his village: the Memramcook Institute, formerly, l’Université St Joseph, which dates back to 1864.
Bourgeois says Heritage Developments, a Moncton based property company that also owns the historic former Moncton High School property, has purchased the property and is considering options for redevelopment including a possible boutique hotel.
A provincial spokesperson told CHMA that the transaction is ongoing, and further details about the price, or any protections for the buildings may be released once the agreement is completed.
“It’s been sitting empty since 2012,” says Bourgeois. “It’s such an important and imposing property in the downtown core of Memramcook, so I’m very happy to know that somebody who wants to do something with it has bought it. It’s also very comforting because they are engaging in open dialogue with us.”
