A new Catholic elementary school is coming to Drayton now that the province has pledged $17 million in funding.
Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae and Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced the funding Friday in Drayton. Lecce said his government is dedicated to building more schools, accusing the Liberals of closing 600 schools.
The school will serve children in both the Township of Mapleton and the Town of Minto. It will include a childcare centre with 64 spaces for children under four and the elementary school will accommodate 222 children from kindergarten to grade eight.
Mapleton does not have a licensed childcare provider and Mayor Gregg Davidson said some parents are having to drive their children to Cambridge to access childcare returning to Mapleton to work.
The site for the new school is already selected at the end of Bonnywood Drive in Drayton. It is expected to open in September of 2026.
