The provincial government is set to embark on a series of consultations with local First Nations and municipal councils in Northumberland County as it seeks to expand nuclear power.
Ontario Power Generation is eyeing a former power facility in the Wesleyville area.
Early government estimates predicted that the facility, once constructed, could produce 10,000 megawatts of clean energy, enough to power 10 million homes. The project could create 10,500 jobs, 1700 in Port Hope alone.
The project in the early stages, would still need to complete environmental and other impact assessment studies, regulatory and licensing requirements before construction would begin.
Northumberland, Peterborough-South MPP David Piccini spoke to CFWN News at the announcement event yesterday, saying it could take up to 15 years for the project to be completed.
