Construction began on Monday for 42 rent-geared-to-income and supportive units in Parkdale, where the city will act as the developer.
The city bought the lot at 111 Brock Ave., near Queen Street West and Dufferin Street, from the Ontario government in 2019 with the intention of turning it into affordable housing.
This project is part of the new public developer delivery model, allowing the city to build affordable rental homes for low and moderate income residents.
Four other city-owned sites will start construction as soon as 2025. They are at 35 Bellevue Ave., 405 Sherbourne St., 1113-1117 Dundas St. W. and 150 Queens Wharf Rd.
CJTM News went to the groundbreaking and explores why the city is getting into housing development and what other initiatives are in the works.
