Last week, the City of Prince Rupert received a federal investment of $77.2 million to upgrade its water distribution system and sewer line.
The project aims to address the frequent water main breaks; the water pipes in Prince Rupert are over 100 years old and are in need of replacement.
Funding comes by way of the disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund and, according to the city, the project aims to increase resilience, modernize infrastructure, and protect the water supply and sewer pipe system. The funding will support upgrades to 26 kilometers of water mains and the separation of stormwater from sewage.
Mayor Herb Pond spoke with CFNR about the struggle with the water distribution system and the need for federal funding and additional funds from the province for a three-year project to replace a third of the water pipes.
