Harassment of municipal staff is a growing problem across Ontario and Canada, says Prince Edward County Councillor Phil St. Jean.
That’s why he proposed a resolution at Tuesday night’s council to to direct staff to bring back a report with updates on guidelines in regards to human resources, work place safety and procedural policies.
The request for a review results from recent incidents directed at municipal staff including inappropriate and threatening behavior, harassment, derogatory comments and mischaracterizations. A previous council attempted to address similar issues but was turned down.
Not all councillors agreed with the proposed resolution saying new policies won’t change anything and that they welcome passionate opinions from their constituents.
Nonetheless, the resolution carried 7 to 5, and staff will return to council with recommendations.
