Since the City of Nanaimo first officially recognized Pride Month 15 years ago, the Progressive Pride flag and the Transgender Pride are flying together for the first time at city hall.
Lauren Semple, president of the Nanaimo Pride Society, opened the ceremony on June 4, saying the raising of the flags is not just to celebrate love and diversity, but also to acknowledge the challenges faced by queer and transgender individuals and the hard work past advocates have done in the past.
Serval representatives for the Nanaimo area spoke about the importance of Pride Month and the need to continue to fight until everyone can be open about who they are.
As well, the Mayor of Nanaimo Leonard Krog came and gave the proclamation of Pride Month before the flags were raised.
