Montreal’s longshore workers are going on a partial, indefinite strike.
Michel Murray of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) told reporters on Monday that workers will begin their strike this Thursday at 11 a.m. This comes after a one-day strike on Sunday, a three-day strike at the start of the month, and a refusal to work overtime since Oct. 10.
The strike is over the work practices of one company in particular, Termont Montreal. As such, it will affect only two terminals and 40 percent of container cargo, accounting for 15 percent of the port’s overall volume.
When reached by phone, Termont directed CKUT to the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) for comment. The MEA said they “took note” of the strike notice but did not otherwise comment.
