Port Hope’s Owen Beck and Team Canada open the World Junior Hockey Championship in Sweden on Boxing Day. Beck is the lone returning player to Canada’s World Juniors team after winning gold last year as a late addition to replace an injured teammate. The 19-year-old plays for the Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes.
In other local sports news, Cobourg’s Logan Kelly has committed to play NCAA Division 3 hockey at SUNY Canton in New York starting next season. Kelly, 19, plays in the Ontario Junior A Hockey League for his hometown Cobourg Cougars.
In Major League Rugby news, Cobourg’s Mason Flesch has signed with the Chicago Hounds. The former St. Mary Thunder high school player and Cobourg Saxons club player was a member of the Toronto Arrows, which recently announced they were folding and wouldn’t be playing in the 2024 MLR season.
